Nicole’s Baby is crying, and she is trying to find her baby’s immunization information
Role: UX/UI Designer
Duration: 2 weeks
Tools: Miro, Figma
Being a new parent is a whirlwind of challenges and emotions that parents can try to prepare for, but will never be 100% ready. While trying to maintain their daily lives, they are constantly overwhelmed trying to keep track of and remembering their child’s progress. This becomes even more difficult when they have to remember these moments during important times like doctor's visits.
Kinder is an app that aims to assist new moms on their day to day, and allows them to feel closer to their support systems (their doctor, family, and friends). This app allows users to input their child's daily schedule, which would then be compiled in an easy to read way that could be sent to their primary care physician.
Our team wanted to understand how women organize their life and their child's schedule, and see if there was a way we could create a mobile app that would alleviate any frustrations and issues during postpartum
Through our research, we developed Kinder, an app that provides a space for new moms to organize their child's information and keep in contact with their support systems.
Mothers who tested the high-fidelity prototype positively reacted to the efficiency and content of the app. Many commented that they could see themselves using the app and loved the ability to send their child's information to their doctor.
Research Insights
Our team conducted user interviews, and analyzed the data collected from these interviews to understand the challenges mothers face post pregnancy.
We verified our hypothesis that the transition from pregnancy to post pregnancy was very stressful and demanding for new mothers, and concluded these four specific insights:
Parents feel overwhelmed using numerous apps to keep track of their child's schedule and development
Parents feel overwhelmed using numerous apps to keep track of their child's schedule and development
Parents want to have a network of closer family and trusted advisors with them throughout the process
Parents find a journal to document their feelings and schedules to be very helpful
Persona
After these conversations with so many amazing moms, we wanted to create a voice for them that could speak to us through the design process. Our persona Nicole gave us a realistic and reliable reference of our key demographic to refer back to when building out the app. Whenever we hit a roadblock we would take a step back, revisit our persona, and see if our solution was relevant to our key persona.

As we grew a better understanding of our mother Nicole, we wanted to create a clear outline of what her typical day as a supermom can look like. This includes her schedule, as well as all of the highs and lows that may come with balancing a career and motherhood. For this platform, we wanted to hone into Nicole’s lowest part of her day. She's on the phone with her child’s primary care physician, and is unable to recall any of the information about her child’s routine and appointments to answer their questions.

Designing & Usability Testing
After taking the time to compile our research we entered the design phase, where we quickly brainstormed several ideas, and did two rounds of presenting and critiquing until we found common core features we felt would benefit our users.
We went through two usability testing rounds for the mid-fidelity and the high fidelity before settling on our final design. We tested 5 participants for each round, and it was important for us to pull users who were pregnant in the past 3 years. Each participant was given 3 tasks to compete.
We found great feedback, and areas that needed improvement. We found that mothers loved the circular design, and that the data would create information graphs that could be sent to their doctor.
Kinder's iOS app
The core feature that make up Kinder aim to feel like a helping hand to new mothers. The more hectic their life becomes, the more they will benefit and rely on the application to maintain balance. The benefits of dedicated and through usage is the ability to fully understand their child's schedule, connect more closely with their doctor, and have a memory box to look back on in the future.
Feature 1
We wanted to create a schedule input system that easily allows mothers to view and input their child's schedule. In the main landing page, each user can see a 24 hour view of their schedule due to the circular design.
Feature 2
In order to connect mothers with their doctors, we designed the app to easily compile the input information, and create informational graphs to view statistics on their child's day. Mothers will be able to easily see their doctor's information, and can easily share their child's information.
Feature 3
Mothers would be able to upload photographs and memories of their child, and can easily send these photos to their close family or friends. In order to have more control over their child's privacy, there are multiple locations, where parents can switch their child's privacy on and off.
Feature 4
Mothers shared they they feel that journaling helped them release feelings of being overwhelmed. We felt that by adding a journal, mothers can not only keep track of their child'd day to day, but also allow them to keep track of their everyday mood.
WHAT WE LEARNED
Mothers responded positively to the ability to send information about their children's schedule easily to their doctor, especially since many women felt that by the time they went to their doctors they couldn't recall many things they wanted to. While we know what mothers require, there would need to be more testing to see what doctors are looking for when they interact with their patients.
While mothers love to share information about their child, there is a need control and curate exactly what theyreveal. Mothers need easy and straightforward preference bars with ways to hide and share information about their child. There also need to be ensured security and systems that instill confidence in the user that their privacy is highest importance.
